The Porphyria Information Centre is a unique service offering advice and assistance to doctors, pharmacists, people with porphyria and their families. It operates from within the MRC/UCT Liver Research Centre and works closely with our diagnostic laboratory and our clinicians. Among our most important functions are giving:
- advice on the diagnosis of porphyria and on how to be tested
- advice on management
- drug safety information.
We maintain a comprehensive database of published and unpublished information on the safety of drugs in porphyria, which we make available via telephonic consultations, our published booklet and from this website.
When calling for advice on drug safety, please keep the box or package handy. Drugs are sold under two names: the generic name (an official name which we need to look up the drug) and any number of trade names, which make identification difficult for us since they may frequently change.
